Food and Beverage Employment

This post shows the importance the Food and Beverage cluster is on creating a stable community. On the toronto website has a link to a pdf file that talks all about the overview of clusters and how much employment is created because of it.

The following graph below is a snapshot of the top 10 Food and Beverage Manufacturing Employment in the US MSA’s and Toronto’s CMA. This also shows the comparison is growth or decline from 2004 to 2006.

The next picture shows the top 10 Food and Beverage location Quotients in 2006. As you can see in the picture, Toronto plays a very important role being the second largest in size.

GTA’s Cluster Competitiveness

The competitveness of a city or region is highly determined by how competitive the regions clusters are. This is important for the Food and Beverage cluster in the GTA because it explains what other clusters there are. The following are the most important clusters in the GTA, as mentioned in the report on the Toronto website.

Toronto Food Business Incubator (TFBI)

Toronto has a food business incubator. I think this would be an interesting link if you are in the food industry and are interested in getting support. The Toronto Food and Beverage cluster includes food processing, food wholesaling, food retailing and food service.

The following picture shows the breakdown of the program and what is expected after completing it.

International Food Processing & Innovation Centre (IFPI)

The previous post spoke about the Food and Business Incubator. There is also an International Food Processing & innovation center as well. This would be very important to look at when going into the food processing industry as well.

The IFPI helps grow businesses by supporting their start-ups as they soon turn into established enterprises.

Toronto’s food processing industry employs over 40,000 people and generates in excess of $20 billion in annual sales. Exports to the United States have tripled over the last 10 years, and sales have grown by 5 percent annually for the past 15 years. This is important to know because by getting involved with community programs, like the International Food Processing & Innovation Centre, will increase the chances of success within a company in the feild.

Canadian Food & Beverage Show

This post talks about the Canadian Food & Beverage Show and HostEx. This show allows buyers and sellers to showcase their products. In an effort to leverage the attributes of both events, the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association is marrying these expositions to create the CRFA Show designed to be the greatest buying forum in Canada for the foodservice and hospitality industries. The CRFA Show brings these two major events together.

The CRFA Show will take place at Canada’s largest venue, the Direct Energy Centre located in Toronto on the grounds of the Exhibition Place.

Food Manufacturing in the GTA

The GTA Manufacturing Study has been created by the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, also known as GTMA. The information was taken from the online report.

Key Food Manufacturers in the GTA

Key findings:

• Exports consumed about 21% of Food Manufacturing production in Canada in 1997.

• Ontario Food Manufacturing shipments in 1997 were valued at $20.3 billion, which represents a 2.6% growth over

1996

• Food Manufacturing shipments account for about 8.9% of overall manufacturing production in Ontario

• Food Manufacturing is one of the top five manufacturing industry sectors in the GTA in terms of overall

employment

• Approximately 39,500 people were employed in Food Manufacturing in the GTA in 1999, accounting for about 8.4%

of manufacturing employment in the Region (which is similar to the percentage of manufacturing employment that

Food Manufacturing accounts for at the provincial level)

• Employment growth in Food Manufacturing in the GTA has lagged behind overall growth in the manufacturing

sector, increasing by only 5.3% between 1994 and 1999

• The Scott’s Directory of Ontario Manufacturers identifies a total of 135 Food Manufacturers, which employ 60 or

more people in the GTA.

This report goes through many detailed charts and explains the importance of food manufacturing.

Food and Beverage Manufacturing Sector in Brampton?

Brampton’s business industry is growing rapidly. The different sectors that Brampton has to offer is:

Food and Beverage
Information and Communication Technology
Life Sciences
Retail Administration and Logistics

The food and beverage industry plays a significant role in Ontario’s economy. There are more than 3,652

companies that employ more than 107,000 people, and generates almost $32 billion in sales annually, as stated in

the Brampton Food and Beverage Report. It is said that food processing is the third most important manufacturing

industry in Ontario.

The report also goes through many things such as specialty foods, education and workforce, where we are leading in

economic growth infrastructure and so forth.

BRAMPTON – FOOD & BEVERAGE’S BASE
